The Story of the Wizard and the Seagull

There was once an old wizard who took a regular early morning stroll along the beach. At that time of day, it was always completely deserted. There was no-one around for miles. But one day, as he walked, he heard a faint sound.

He stopped and listened, hearing only a barely audible sound over the crash of the waves.

What could it be?

He tuned in and started walking over the sand dunes. And so he came upon a seagull in great distress.

He had never seen anything like it before. Its little body was very sick. It was almost just bones. And it had lost both its wings.

He could see that the bird had struggled for a long time. It was still able to find food. It could still walk around and catch little morsels here and there. But the quality of that food was never enough to sustain a strong, growing bird.

The old man took pity on the bird. He took it home and fed it and gave it water. He told the bird that - if it wanted - he could heal it.

That its body would be healthy.
That it would develop and grow strong wings again.
That it would be able to fly off and find its own food.

The seagull agreed. He wanted to be healed.

And so the old wizard set to work. He knew it was pointless giving the sick bird any of its wings first. One strong wing would simply flap around and completely exhaust the bird. Two strong wings - well, even if it did manage to take off, the sick bird would probably be dead within a few minutes - it had no energy as it was.

The first thing to do was to make sure its body was strong and healthy. It had to be nursed back to health first. This process took a few weeks. And only once that was done, did the old wizard set to work on the wings. One at a time.

With his magic potion, he made one wing grow back. He made sure the bird got used to this and could flap it around. Only then did he make the other wing grow back. And he made sure the bird got used to that and could flap it around.

Then - with the body restored to health, the wings both strong and beautiful - the wizard set the bird off to fly into the sky. To soar high and seek its own food.

A strong bond had been formed between the seagull and the old wizard.
They stayed friends until the ends of their lives.
